The 'C' Word

My aunt lost to it.

My little nephew fought a war against it.

A grandaunt was recently informed of her condition.

The first prey and their ultimate defeat changes things.

Changes perspectives.

Raises questions.

Hope starts to dim.

If there is one thing that makes me want to doubt my optimism towards life; is the way..

Nature annihilates its own existence.

It can't get any better!

16 Jan, 7:15am
I reached the Bus station that should take me to Hangzhou City, Xiao Shan Airport from Shanghai. Turns out, they had no services in the morning or in the early afternoon.

Weird! How can I be holding onto a flight ticket that is to depart in the afternoon and no possible services to transport me from my current location to the airport.

After what was an eternity of discussion with the receptionist in her "amazing" English and my equally "amazing" Chinese, she gave me an alternative solution. Which was not direct, and she had no idea if the other location even had services that would get me to my destination. Either way, I had very little time and decided to take the shot.

"You take Bus 144 to Shanghai Nan Huozhe Zhan. But not Huozhe Zhan, You take Bus to Hangzhou City. But, that bus will not go to Airport. You take taxi to Airport."

"Okay. So how do I know which is my stop or where the bus station is? How long does this local bus take to get to Shanghai Railway Station? And how long is the duration from Shangahi to Hangzhou?"

"Errr. You alight 40 mins later. Its the last station. And from there you take the 3 hour bus ride to Hangzhou city".

I thanked her and saw the bus 144 just as I left my current location. Boarded 144, had a free 40 minute ride, for I forgot to pay and no one realized.

Possibly the  only good thing that happened that day.

As I reached my destination and alighted, I literally took a 360 degrees turn to take in my location. No point, I had no idea where I was. She told me not to take the train ride to Hangzhou and I couldn't find the city-city bus station anywhere.

Heck her!

I gave up and walked towards the Railway station and located the counter that sold tickets for that day. And bought myself a last min "no seater" or better known as a "standing class" for a two hour ride to Hangzhou.

The ticket was only 29RNB and that is way cheap than I assumed or my initial city bus ride which is 100RNB.

I stood the full 2 hours crammed between Chinese men, women, children, elderly you name it and they were there. Chinese and their big ass baggages. Chinese and their love for instant noodles. Chinese and their amazing way of being able to hold over a hundred people in a cabin that could only hold say 60?

I have to admit, although a little uncomfortable for later I couldn't feel my legs, I finally got my taste of the real China.

Did I mention I felt famous? Yes, I was the only foreigner if not brown skin passenger so I got free stares for the entire 2 hours. Cameras were the only things missing.

When I finally got away from the clutches of China's population, I had to battle with the remaining Chinese men who were at the exit of Hangzhou train station, waiting to grab you and show you around Hangzhou. They were not as persuasive as the ones in Shanghai. That was a relief.

I finally got into a taxi that resembled the legal ones in Shanghai. However, I wasn't too sure when I finally settled into. Actually I am still not sure if the cab ride was legal or I was cheated.

As I chucked my bag in the back seat, and popped in beside the driver, he started off saying, "A flat rate of 120RNB for a ride to the airport".

I pointed at the meter, which had a receipt dangling from it.

"What's wrong with the meter?"

And he started explaining how they don't use the meter, cos people wait hours for cabs and they aren't many cabs.

I have no idea how the two things are related.

Along the journey, he stopped when this lady was flagging down the cab and asked where she was headed. And I remembered as I was waiting in line for a cab, two ladies who didn't know each other were sent to take the same cab as their destination was the same.

So basically, the meter is redundant. Or  I just had a ride in an illegal cab.

Either way, the driver was a friendly guy who spoke bits of English and told me to improve my Mandarin. He even gave me career advice on how I should switch from Western Medicine to Chinese Medicine as it brings in more cash in China.

Finally the Airport came into sight, I stashed the cash into his hands, grabbed my backpack dashed out.

Only to realize my flight was not on the departure screen.

I approached the information counter to enquire of my missing flight. She punched in a few digits on her telephone and returned to me with this:

"There is only flight for this airline and it flies off at 1135pm".

"That is not possible. I have a flight for 210pm. Are you telling me the flight has been postponed to 1135pm".

"I do not think so. You need to check with your agent with the mix up".

"There is no agent. I booked my flight online".

I showed her mu itinerary with full confidence that the airlines made a mistake.

She dialed the same numbers again. She told them of my booking number and they exchanged a few words in Chinese and she later looked at me with a smile.

Aha. The hope that reiterated my confidence.

"Ma'am, you booked your flights for February 16th".

"huh".

I grabbed the sheet of paper from her hands (I later apologized) and just stared at it for a good 10 seconds before my palm reached for my forehead.

Feb 16, 0210pm.WTF.

16 Jan, 1250pm
I was tired from not sleeping the previous night or the night before. I was tired from standing against the wall with my 13kg backpack at my feet and my other leg jammed behind a door to maintain my balance from falling on any Chinese or having any one falling on me.

I dumped my bags onto the baggage trolley thingys and started walking around the world-newest-and probably-boringest-airport aimlessly. I wanted to still use the ticket but the lady at the counter had no idea however she did say "probably can't".

Thing with Chinese, they never say "I do not know" they just give tell you it cannot be done. More often than not, there is an alternative.

But instead, I took her word for it and started considering other routes. A flight to Hong Kong was leaving in 30 minutes, but I was short of 900 bucks. Credit card got declined so lets just leave it at that.

Back to Square one.

The airline I bought the ticket before will only open their counters two hours before departure. I was left with no choice but to camp at the airport for over 10 hours.

There I sat, staring at my ticket, hoping something would take shape and tell me "You can leave now and won't have to stare into space for the next half of the day".

I tend to forget my room mate's advice to only print the itinerary and not the whole thing, cos that would mean the 4 sheets of rules get printed as well and people don't actually read these things. Least, I never did. Till that day.

"Changes to this booking can be made up to 48 hours before departure".

The mantra finally worked.

I was way too tired to get all cranky and worked up, I only had two words running through my mind: Think Usha. Think..

There was no wireless facility at the international departures. And I hadn't brought my laptop with me to actually use the facility at the Domestic departures either.

No point there.

My local pre paid card ran outta cash and I had start roaming with my Singapore number.

Blackberry saves the day.

Started using GPRS (which will eventually cost me much), to long onto the website. Sadly, I couldn't make changes from the mobile site and the main site wouldn't load. I called a few numbers directly.

China: "No English Please. I do not understand English. Only Chinese or Cantonese". I hung up.

The lady said that in English. My Chinese will only worsen the existing situation and the last thing I wanna do is make flight changes in Chinese.

The next hotline was for  Hong Kong. Same thing. Followed by Singapore. Slightly different but same dead end nonetheless.

"Our operators are currently busy. Please try again later". Hung up again.

Finally I called the home nation of the airlines and simply stalked them till someone took my call. My temptation to cut to the chase while she was saying stuff I was barely paying attention to was overwhelming. Eventually, I figured it was not that I was not paying attention but the female on the other line had a problem enunciating her words. I just didn't understand her.

"Sorry but I don't quite get you". I repeated this a million times throughout the conversation before I stopped. I sensed the onset of annoyance in her voice. Even her "thank you for waiting ma'am" sounded sinister.

Or maybe it was just me.

Either it didn't jeopardise the situation. She changed my flight for 16 January and told me to pay a couple hundred bucks extra for the changes made.

Phew!

The rest of the day I spent my time reading Shantaram and observing people entering and leavin the airport.

(Story doesn't quite end there actually)

16 Jan, 9:35pm
The ticketing counters finally opened and I paid my cash and saw my new itinerary.

Oh wow!

I had an hour 15 mins to check out from the first flight, grab my baggage and check into my connecting flight to Singapore. My baggage will not be directly transferred whereas the lady over the phone said, it would.

I told you I barely understood her.

Least the friendly dude at the counter, checked my backpack into premium so that it will be the first few to appear on the baggage carousel.

17 Jan, 4:25am
My flight should have landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport but instead has been delayed.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a problem. Everyone else is just sleeping.

My hand reached for my hair when realization hit.

My glasses were missing.

In the dark, I was searching but to no avail. I am almost blind without my glasses during the day. And in the dark, you can might as well assume I am blind.

I turned to the Indonesian girl and said who by the way is uber nice. "I dropped my glasses.".

Why I said that I have no idea. She got the hint and that is what that matters.

"Lets search together she said. She used the light from her mobile and voila she found my glasses under my seat". :-)

My saviour. I would have swore I saw her cape flying behind her as she swore into the night skies.

And we started talking and she was also a student in Shanghai. I was telling her about my connecting flight and that I probably would have to move fast so please give me way.  She laughed.

17 Jan, 5am
Flight landed 35 minutes later. Plane came to a stop and people started standing and removing their bags from the overhead compartments. I took mine, bade farewell to the Indonesian and started using the words "Please" "Thank You" "I'm late" "Please make way, I'm sorry" as I bypassed everyone to the exit and from there on just ran.

I ran to the arrival counter, took a couple of the arrival cards for foreigners and started scribbling while standing in queue.

Will never condemn a doctor's handwriting ever again.

Again another dash, this time I had a crowd to handle before I saw the florescent orange backpack cover of mine. Grab and run was my motive right now. Grabbed and ran from the arrivals to the departures.

Grateful for the small airport. If this were Changi, I would have collapsed.

Checked my baggage in again, and went to the waiting area where I  was told to head of to Gate 55 or at least that was what I heard. It was a long run on the runway. No I was not running right next to the jets.

Although the thought appears pretty. :-)

I was running beside the loading unloading of baggages along the runway. Till I realized I might be going the wrong way. There was 20 mins before my plane took and this time time I was stressed. Till I saw a dude at the loading dock who I was begging to not show me but bring me to gate 55. Till he asked for my flight number and told me its Gate 85 not 55!

Seriously this can't get any better. Optimism. One reason I am still living.

Another long run to gate 85 and this time I showed the stewardess at the entrance my boarding pass and even asked her if this was the flight to Singapore. Man, she messed with my head.

"Is this the flight to Singapore?"

"No. Bangkok."

"What? Do you know where the flight to Singapore is?"

"I don't know."

"Nice. Thanks".  And I almost walked away when she pulled me by the arm and said "Just kidding. This is the flight to Singapore".

If only she knew how amazing my day had been...

    After the CT scan...

    I am Anemic and I self-diagnosed myself.

OK, maybe that was not the right thing to do. But I am a Doctor-To-Be. And it seemed like the best option to analyse myself. If I can't diagnose myself, I probably can't diagnose anyone else.

A summary of how I came about to diagnosing myself was like this:

    1. My CT scan is clear: Which eliminates any hemorrhage and what not
    2. But my dizziness still persist!
    3. I get cold feet and hands when temperature drops
Which can only be explained by the fact that I am either pernicious or Iron deficient. But most likely Iron deficient.

Ever since I moved to the dorm I became lazier and stopped cooking entirely. I eat at the canteen sometimes but mostly live on bread and random junk food. Being a vegetarian, most of the food I find I can't consume. So, with my sabbatical from cooking, brought in a significant distance between me and vegetables cooked without meat.

They add meat in vegetables too at times. Annoying!

And because I have been experiencing excessive amounts of hair fall, increased heart rate after climbing 6 floors and loss of appetite. I can only say, I am anemic.

Its a mild case, which is why I can still walk and type this post. Otherwise, I'd be face down on my keyboard before this post ends.

However, now that my condition is somewhat deduced. I have to eat more stuff that is rich in Iron and Vitamin B12 to get back onto the fat, noisy Usha that I am. :)

Can't run for a while, for it takes a while for the body to be accustomed to strenuous exercises and especially ones that require massive amounts of Oxygen. The last thing I need now is to faint on the streets of Shanghai.

My diet has been changed to include more citrus foods and a big fat reminder: DO NOT SKIP MEALS!

I used to skip meals so very frequently, it became a habit. A bad one as I have now learned. :s

Note: By the way, do not try skipping meals at home. Self diagnosis is also not recommended.

    First CT Scan

CT scan in general is not that terrifying. Why am I saying this?

Cos I just had one. A Summary of why I ended up taking a CT scan was cos, I abruptly fainted and hurt my head real bad. Which by the way has left me with a battle 'bump' on my head.

Initially, I self diagnosed myself to be safe and without any possible blot clots in my brain. Although the bump hasn't quite disappeared yet.

After the fainting incident I had blurred visions, I wasn't walking straight no more. And I couldn't be on my feet for more than a minute. You would see me looking for something to hold onto to regain my balance.

Now that lead to me going to the hospital to have a consult. The doctor sent me for a CT scan just to make sure I haven't had any hemorrhage.

    And..That's how it all began.

The results were in under an hour and me and my brain are both perfect and fine.

Gonna hang the scan on my wall. :)

    If I Die Young...

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little, cold finger, I've
Never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there's a
Boy here in town says he'll love me forever

Who would've thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when your dead how people start listenin'

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

    The ballad of a dove
    Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save them for a time when your really gonna need them, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, well
    I've had, just enough time

So put on your best, boys and I'll wear my pearls.

    Without Borders

Heard of Medicine Sans Frontier? They are the Doctors without Borders. Similarly they have the Reporters Without Borders. Apart from these well known ones, there are other similar "without borders" groups that are working for one cause or another.

The A-Z Guide of World's "Without Borders" Groups discusses the many other groups that individuals have formed for one cause or another.

Some of the few interesting ones were:

Mothers Without Borders - this came about as they were trying to reduce the number of children who were being orphaned.

Check 'Em Out. Chances are you might end up signing up for any one of them. :-)

    A Changing Horizon

So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. - Christopher Mccandless

Over a Cup of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Hustle and bustle need not necessarily be on the streets. It can invade an otherwise, quiet cafe; on a cold winter's night. Every man for himself. And every other hot drink on the menu, his coveted companion.

The jazz music in the background; with its prominent saxophone piece.  Hot, piping cups of Americano, Latte or the ever-needed Espresso shot for a reality check. Haven in three different sizes yearning to be held by the customers; for the insane winds beyond the cafe, not only lashed at the shivering trees but also took its shot on the poor men, much poorly equipped for the crazy winter.

To the left of the barista's counter, was an ever enthusiastic, probably high on sugar elderly male. He never once took a break from his talking. His listeners included a plump, short haired lady and another middle aged female with much shorter hair but red in color. They were such good listeners. Or actors for they did appear as if every Chinese word the older man said held power.

Abruptly, the older man's words came to a halt. A younger lady had just joined the crowd and it was her turn to share her thoughts. The man instead kept himself occupied by turning to his right, sharing a smile with a girl in a sky blue hoodie. As, he left to leave with the rest of the females, he again gave a "good-bye" smile to the girl. All there was to it was a smile and people were acquainted; even if it was for a brief second.

Image does not belong to this site so bless the soul who took this shot.
About a meter from where a new friendship took birth, were seated a pair of young chinese dudes. Looking all cool and hip, they were discussing about Obama and checking out a girl simultaneously. Politics in the air. Fashion in their wear. Hot Cuppucino in their hands and eyes towards the really tall, almost cow-girl like lady who seated across from them. Multi-tasking?

Another group settled in the middle of the cafe grounds. All five of them had similar features and exact same blonde hair. They were a family from a non-English speaking European country. The three sons can very well be triplets if not for their varying heights. The family were probably on their way back home from fetching the kids from school. Such massive backpacks, with only the children owing one each, spoke so much of school than a camping trip.

While their bright yellow hair shined under the orange lights of the cafe, a bright red coat made its presence felt. It was worn by a young chinese female, presumably in her mid 20s, with hazel colored hair. For the first time, a traffic post, with the stop signal was witnessed inside a cafe.

Middle aged ladies in their colorful scarfs and middle aged fashion statements occupied the tables closest to the barista's counter.

A group of Caucasian men with receding hair lines, took the seats furthest away from the women. Deliberately? Stock Markets, dilemmas over property investments, Sydney or San Fransisco, etc. were their train of thoughts while their poor lattes stood waiting patiently.

A young bespectacled chinese dude, whose dressing style suggested a creative mind, settled into the seat nearest to a power point. He had his precious Mac. A cup of hot chocolate and his eyes were glued to Apple's screen.

All of this took place, approximately 45 degrees from where me in my sky-blue hoodie and my beloved Caramel Macchiato were comfortably positioned.

    Entertainment Today!

Because I should be studying, and also because this is the best time to come up with ridiculous posts so as to avoid the texts that lay before me: I write about my fictional love life heading downhill.

It started with Josh Groban. I am not sure if he is still interested in pretty girls or boys? 10% hope lingers on...

Continued with James McAvoy, who chose to get married even before I could express myself.

Wentworth Miller entered thy life and I wrote two letters. Yeah, something that never took off with McAvoy, thing is: now I hear rumors of him being interested in pretty boys as well. :(( Heartbreaking I know.

While I was still nursing the pain of Miller and choosing a deaf ear to all rumors, Jim Parsons entered. Yes, the tall lanky, intelligent kid from The Big Bang Theory. And Guess what? He is engaged to a Phillip!

    What do I do now?

I am betting on Joseph Gordon- Lewitt. One reason cos he reminds me of an ex-flame who goes by the name  Keanu Reeves and another cos it was love at first sight from the film, 500 Days of Summer.  :-)

    "Double-Edged Sword," He says.

A friend's brother who has been a doctor for seven years now, and is only one step away from becoming a full fledged surgeon, has decided to give up medicine entirely. .

"He is being idealistic", the mother claims.
"No point in practicing in something I hold no belief in." He responds.

The former doctor has now ventured into the public speaking arena to tell people to revamp their lives before its too late. He feels that, by the time they make that doctor's visit their health is beyond hope and they spend large amounts for better healthcare. Truth is, the body has already been deteoriated and doctors are only providing an environment to improve your existing damaged life. Cure is not always the case And he encourages a healthier lifestyle before going all out with the cash to the best hospitals.

"I have seen so much suffering  and pain, I find no hope in medicine when the body is capable of healing itself. Why torture the body in the first place? Take great care of the temple and work at improving individual lifestyles."

I have been studying medicine for two years. The rate at which the healthcare industry is changing is rapid. Medications and its side effects transform at an equally terrifying rate. Considering how different medications respond towards different immune systems, sometimes even the healers themselves lack answers to never ending questions.

My Father, a Homeopathy Physician who ironically is sponsoring my education in western medicine has no faith in what I am being taught. He finds the entire industry hypocritical and perhaps indifferent towards human life. Research annoys him when they are unable to find a cure. For one thing, I am not too sure if he understands the concept of research. Oh well, that's for another day.

But of course, you can't stop the ones who believe in these high cost welfare. All patients want is to get better and back on their feet. If high cost means improvement, even if it is temporary; there are loads to plunge into it. There is no one to blame.

Back to the story, the ex-doc is now making arrangements to meet people and tell them to invest their hard earned cash with improving their health without any external contamination of medications or whatsoever. Rather,
"Do it the traditional way by having more greens in the diet, exercise and positive energy."
Positive energy brings about a whole lot of changes into the environment that he believes changes things that scalpel fails to bring about. Which I gotta agree. :-)

    Good News

Life is all bright and shiny now that my landlady is metaphorically dead. I have moved to the University dormitory which is way smaller but peaceful. I am way behind on most of my assignments and exam reviews. Despite all that, things are looking fairly manageable. Good news aye.

    Humility takes a backseat

At about 300 words, I was stuck. How am I to both flaunt my talents and appear modest simultaneously?

Scholarship Personal Statements require just that exact balance.

After walking around for 12 over hours, going in and out of the various pavilions at the World Expo, I was tired. Imagine trying to be boastful when I can't even recall what I was good at. :s

Liyana almost came to my rescue, except that her brain was far more drained than mine was. She still managed to give me some pointers though. Thanks Woman! What will I do without you?

After scribbling down the stuff she said, I took a nap. Now why did I nap when I had just hours to go before handing in my scholarship forms?

Sleeping helps to orientate your thoughts and at that moment, it seemed like the best way to ensure I come up with a reasonably written promotional statement of myself and not sound like a Jill-ass.

Bottom-line is: I have applied for a scholarship to fund part of my semester fees and hopefully it comes through.

    Wish me Luck!

    Everyday Chinese

I had a hair cut today. A little background on my haircut experiences. Every time I visit the hairdresser, she changes my hairstyle so very drastically it doesn't look like how it did the previous time. And you would think I told her that I kinda want a similar cut.

Anyways, today the girl who did my hair was slow and meticulous. She didn't tugged my head or exerted any amount of force that reminded me that I was having my hair cut. Instead she did a clean job and even recommended a particular style for me to follow. :) Of course she is not aware, I had my existing short hair cut even shorter just so I wouldn't have to comb before heading for school.

This other guy who was attending to my roomies haircut just wouldn't stop talking (to and about me) and all the time he was talking about "how my English is better than your Chinese" or "I learnt English myself. You should learn Chinese yourself" and "Chinese is difficult and is also the most famous language".

I was totally convinced that guy wanted to prove the fact that I was shying away from speaking in Chinese or basically I suck in Chinese. Till the time I left he was speaking to me in English and for the same motive alone.

I hope to not see him again. Least till my Chinese is of a standard he appreciates.

    A Random Ayu-bowan!

Cleared my room of the few stuff that still remains to remind me I grew up within that four purple walls. One of it was this huge world map that kept me company on days when I repeatedly told myself why the periodic table was my Bible.  The map by the way is gonna cross seas and accompany me back to Shanghai. :-)

I was doing all of these; cleaning and packing away without my mom telling me too. Which explains how so very bored I was. It was raining every other day, and I felt ill for a couple of days as well. On a whim I decided to leave the cuckoo's nest for a short while before I leave for my semester again. No, I didn't make that decision cos both my mental and physical status were on a record low. Randomness makes up my life.

Oh well, bottom line is: I have now recovered and am gonna head to the nation that has only recently, come to embrace peace. The location however only involved partial randomness. Budget control is a must for unemployed undergraduates. So, the place was a random pick from the list of where-usha-will-be-able-to-afford-ten-days-without-sleeping-on-the-roads.

    googled the image guys :P
If any one of you reading this have visited this part of the world, let me know what I should be looking forward to. If there ain't none, wait a while and I will come enlighten you. ;-)

    Fate-Less

The Great Wall of China and Me
Morpheus: Do you believe in fate Neo?
    Neo: no.
    Morpheus: Why not?
Neo: Because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life.

    - The Matrix -

I honestly don't like the idea. On one hand, it may appear that less effort is required now that, fate/destiny whichever fancy name you wanna give it, has everything arranged and all one has to do is sit through and enjoy the ride.

On the other hand, it makes one wonder and perhaps feel helpless that his/her decisions that were made considering whatever he had to consider at that moment is in vain. That in actual fact, nothing was required after all. We have been given a brain and also told not to think since everything is laid out for us and we just have to move.

Is that the way it is? Or is there something I have yet to notice?

    For Love or For Money?

The following took place on one of the matchmaking shows of China.

One of the female participants was asked on the type of husband she wants and she replied saying "a well endowed man in terms of monetary needs".

"Why rich in particular?", she was asked again.

And her reply which made way to becoming one of the famous lines of Chinese reality programmes:

"I'd rather cry in a fancy BMW than be with a loving husband on a bicycle".
